Shopify names Finkelstein president, shuffles C-suite as longtime executive Miller departs

Toby Shannan, who currently runs Shopify’s support division, will become COO; chief talent officer Brittany Forsyth and chief legal officer Joe Frasca will report to him. Talking point: While Lütke has been increasingly visible amid the company’s rapid expansion and skyrocketing stock performance, Harley Finkelstein has often served as Shopify’s face. As of last year, he oversaw the company’s financial solutions, international and Shopify Plus divisions, each a key area of growth. Shannan is one of Shopify’s longest-serving employees—he joined in 2010 when the company was still named Jaded Pixel Technologies. In a note to staff, Lütke said the moves will allow him to “focus on product.” The CEO’s role change comes as Shopify prepares to expand into major new business areas, including the rollout of its fulfillment network and the launch of a business bank account. Miller is the second major executive departure this year, following the February exit of Jeff Weiser, who replaced him as chief marketing officer.
