The Edmonton-based video game studio responsible for the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises made the announcement Wednesday. The studio will continue developing upcoming games for both franchises, general manager Gary McKay said in the release. (The Logic)
Talking point: Bioware reportedly had about 250 staff and McKay said the company will place as many laid-off workers as possible within EA’s other studios, adding there are a “significant” number of openings. (EA’s global careers website lists 14 in Edmonton.) The layoffs come three months after BioWare moved production of Star Wars: The Old Republic to boutique studio Broadsword along with most of the game’s roughly 70-person development team. Meanwhile, as my colleague Aleksandra reported in June 2022, 16 workers with Keywords, a firm that provided contract staff to Bioware, voted to unionize. EA did not answer The Logic’s question on whether the layoffs were related to the vote.
