Talking point: Dye & Durham has said it plans to grow through an “acquire and integrate” playbook, and the Telus deal will give it another way to connect its legal and financial customers—this time by linking to financial institutions for mortgage instructions and discharges. Dye & Durham has been under scrutiny amid a recent price hike, a go-private offer and a probe by U.K. competition regulators. Telus’s platform will give it even wider reach to a “de facto national payment infrastructure in Canada” that moves over $1.3 trillion yearly. Telus, meanwhile, is continuing to firm up and cash in on its business lines outside its core telecom operations, such as its health-care business, its expansion into agriculture and Telus International’s IPO. Dye & Durham is financing the deal with part of a previously announced $1.8-billion senior secured credit facility that recently closed.
