Talking point: Dream is the first major Canadian developer to make an investment in co-living. Though such spaces exist in Canada through websites like coliving.com, this firm offers living spaces owned by professional hosts, and not by developers. It will start to see competition from startups over the next year, however. Node, a co-living company headquartered in London, purchased a building in Kitchener-Waterloo and plans to open its first location by the end of 2020, before expanding across Canada. Co-living has appeal among entrepreneurs for its cheaper pricing and sense of community. Other real estate companies are looking to service this sector with similar models; Toronto-based Dream Maker Ventures, the investment arm of Toronto-based real estate firm Dream Maker Corp., offers Dream Suites, which are fully-furnished rooms with common working areas, to portfolio companies. In April, half of the Techstars accelerator’s Toronto cohort was working out of Dream Suites.
Correction: A previous version of this briefing incorrectly stated that Dream Maker Ventures is Dream Unlimited’s venture capital arm. Dream Maker Ventures is actually the investment arm of Dream Maker Corp., a Toronto-based real estate firm. The piece has been updated to reflect the change.
