More than 400 scientists from around the world signed an open letter that three University of Toronto professors drafted calling for the creation of an international AI oversight body. It urges setting standards for safe AI models and requiring companies to report and make public security failures. Seventy Canadian scientists—including professors from the University of Toronto, University of Alberta, McGill University, University of British Columbia and the University of Waterloo—also signed the letter. Talking point: The scientists, who include Canadian AI pioneers Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, also want developers to keep models capable of hacking disconnected from the internet as an initial precaution. The recommendations follow several instances in which models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google escaped closed testing environments and carried out self-directed cyber attacks. “Without immediate changes in AI development and deployment practices, such incidents will continue to occur, and future incidents will be far more damaging to our exposed critical infrastructure,” reads the open letter published Tuesday.
