Dana O’Born was most recently chief strategy officer at the Council of Canadian Innovators (CCI), which represents domestic tech scaleups, as well as managing partner of its lobbying offshoot Signa Strategies. She will take over as chief of staff to Defence Minister David McGuinty on Tuesday, said spokesperson Muntaha Ahmed. iPolitics first reported the appointment. (The Logic, iPolitics)
Talking point: A former staffer in the Ontario Liberal government, O’Born joined CCI in July 2016, shortly after ex-BlackBerry co-CEO Jim Balsillie and then-OMERS Ventures CEO John Ruffolo set it up to advocate for the interests of Canadian tech firms. The group has been a prominent voice on innovation and economic policy over the last decade, including frequent calls for reforms to the way Ottawa funds and buys technology. Last October, CCI spun out Signa as a for-profit firm that could lobby on behalf of individual members. Ottawa has promised to spend more of the huge sums it’s allocated for defence with domestic suppliers and startups, but such companies are still struggling to sell to the Canadian Armed Forces.
