Canada signed a 10-year, $200‑million agreement with Maritime Launch Services to lease a dedicated space launch pad at the firm’s spaceport near Canso, N.S. for the use of the Canadian government and its military, Defence Minister David McGuinty announced. (The Logic)
Talking point: As a full member of NATO’s Starlift program, Canada will also offer rapid space-launch capabilities to military allies from the site. MLS’s spaceport ambitions have suffered setbacks, but CEO Stephen Matier said the company’s finances have been moving in the right direction for the last year and having the federal government as an anchor tenant is “clearly helpful.” McGuinty said Canada needs domestic space-launch capabilities to connect major defence investments via satellite, and to support Canada’s economy. He said 20 per cent of Canada’s economy relies on satellites, including the banking system, cell-phone networks and even food delivery.
