Talking point: The court’s decision leaves the separatist movement in Alberta in limbo. Earlier this month, the Stay Free Alberta petitioners said they dropped off more than enough signatures at Elections Alberta to prompt a referendum question on whether the province should leave Canada. Several First Nations argued in court that Alberta’s referendum process is unconstitutional and would violate treaty rights. Premier Danielle Smith said the court’s decision is undemocratic, and that the province will appeal. Prime Minister Mark Carney said he is focused on co-operative federalism and working with Alberta. He will announce the next stage of his pipeline pact with Smith, including changes to the carbon market, on Friday.
