Talking point: Both the wireless network that provides cellphone service and the wired network that supplies cable internet, landline and television operate on the same core. Rogers estimates that customer rebates to compensate for its widespread service outage in early July will run to $150 million, so if it could have headed off millions in reputational and other damage, the company might have come out ahead by splitting its networks earlier. CEO Tony Staffieri told a committee of MPs last month that $250 million was the price for “urgent fixes to the redundancy and resiliency of our network.” In the new filing to the CRTC, Rogers specified that it’s the cost of dividing the networks; Rogers broke down the now-higher costs for the regulator but redacted the details from the public version of the document, along with how long it will take other than “years.”
