The money it expects to credit customers for its total telecom-service failure that began July 8 won’t be booked until the next quarter, the company said in announcing its most recent financial results. It also said it’s agreed with Shaw Communications to extend the deadline to close its acquisition of Shaw until the end of the year as it faces the Competition Bureau’s and Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne’s regulatory objections. Talking point: Rogers disclosed it faces three class-action suits in Quebec over its service outage, so the $150-million budgeted for refunds could balloon. The Shaw deal also faces risks because of a Dec. 31 deadline on Rogers’s financing—it has billions of dollars of borrowed money in hand, but will have to return it with a small penalty and interest if the deal isn’t done by then. There’s no guarantee of extending the deadline or finding other financing, and even if it can, the additional costs “may be material,” the company said.
