Talking point: Matheson and Opendoor CEO Kaz Nejatian both previously held executive roles at Shopify. Matheson worked there for five years, departing in September 2021. Nejatian was Shopify’s COO from 2022 until September, when he left to lead the real estate firm. Matheson was a leading voice in favour of crypto-friendly regulatory reforms in Canada and has been a vocal proponent of Ottawa’s forthcoming stablecoin legislation. Opendoor became a meme stock last summer and lost its last boss amid pressure from investors. In a LinkedIn post, Matheson said he was joining Opendoor because “there are just a few antiquated industries left and real estate might be top of the list,” presenting an opportunity in the age of AI and blockchain.
