Cohere, Microsoft, among firms launching group promising trustworthy tech

Members of the Trusted Tech Alliance, launched Friday, have committed to develop their products, which include AI systems, securely. They pledge to put them through independent or national risk assessments; disclose any vulnerabilities; comply with both local laws and data protection rules; and ensure their technology all works together. Other participants include Amazon Web Services, Anthropic, and Google Cloud; defence contractors Hanwha and Saab; Indian telecom giant Jio Platforms; and European tech giants Ericsson, Nokia and SAP. (The Logic)

Talking point: The alliance’s commitments are voluntary. Firms are effectively self-verifying that they’re following through, Microsoft president Brad Smith acknowledged at the announcement at the Munich Security Conference. Still, he framed the initiative as a response to countries’ growing focus on digital sovereignty. “There is a desire to use the world’s best technology, but a concern that it won’t always be there for them,” he said. Middle powers are particularly worried about relying on U.S. and Chinese technology that Washington or Beijing could turn off. Alliance members Cohere, Microsoft and SAP have all touted their products as the answer to those concerns in Canada.
