The ‘Waze for Cities Data Program’ will beget user-generated incident and traffic information for the country’s fourth-largest city, and deliver real-time government-reported construction, crash, and road closure data to the Google-owned traffic app. (The Logic)
Talking point: Waze has partnered with Montreal and Winnipeg in 2016, as well as Toronto in 2017 and Ottawa in 2019. These partnerships are meant to provide better traffic, detour and road hazard data to commuters. Congestion is projected to cost $15 billion in lost productivity by 2031 in the Toronto area alone. Yet, Waze’s traffic deals come amid concerns about data collection. Google’s Sidewalk Labs was criticized for its data collection plans before it abandoned its Toronto project last year. (Waze says it doesn’t share data with its Google parent.)
