Talking point: China is set to impose a 34 per cent tariff on all U.S. goods this week—matching the rate of additional “reciprocal tariffs” that Trump announced last week, as well as further curbing exports of some rare earth minerals. On Monday, Trump threatened to pile on another 50 per cent broad-based tariff, which White House press secretary confirmed would take effect at 12:01 a.m. EDT Wednesday. The U.S. has already levied additional universal 20 per cent tariffs on China linked to concerns over fentanyl, so the additional duties would raise the rate of broad-based tariffs to 104 per cent. On Tuesday, China’s commerce ministry said it would not back down. “China firmly rejects such actions.
