The Canadian Journalism Collective (CJC), which Google chose to distribute its contribution to Canadian media, “is unprepared to administer funds within the current calendar year,” according to a brief to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) from Corus Entertainment vice-president Matt Thompson. The company, which laid off 35 journalists in June, says an accounting firm should instead distribute the funds. (The Logic)
Talking point: The CJC has faced close scrutiny since Google selected it to mete out money the search giant is providing in exchange for an exemption from the Online News Act. In its own brief to the CRTC, CBC executive director Bev Kirshenblatt asked that the collective’s mandate be limited so the funds are “targeted to eligible news outlets rather than for other purposes not intended by the legislation.” Though it has been unable to meet administrative deadlines, the CJC “will distribute the first round of funding to eligible news businesses approximately 60 days after the exemption is granted by the CRTC,” interim board director Jean La Rose told The Logic in an email.
