From 2017 to 2018, the number of new registered zero-emissions vehicles, which includes battery- and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, has increased by 115 per cent—the majority of which are registered in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia, says a new Statistics Canada report. (The Logic)
Talking point: New zero-emissions vehicle registrations have been concentrated in the three Canadian provinces that had rebate programs for electric vehicles in the 2017–18 period. While the increase in registrations could play a role in Canada meeting its national climate goals—transportation accounts for 24 per cent of emissions in Canada, the second-largest source—it’s an increase on a small base; it translates to 43,655 new-zero emission vehicles registered in 2018, out of 1,978,562 total new vehicle registrations.
