Talking point: Both countries also agreed to consider using existing financing programs to fund hydrogen projects and connecting shippers and ports on either end of the future supply chain. But the deal—and thus its timelines—isn’t legally binding, and doesn’t contain any export volume targets. Scholz also courted climate-focused investments in Germany by Canadian pension funds during a meeting in Toronto. Securing international markets is a key part of Canada’s domestic hydrogen strategy, which aims to build a $50-billion industry by 2050. The entire hydrogen and fuel-cell sector had $207 million in revenue in 2017, according to think tank Clean Energy Canada, but projects are getting underway. In June 2021, Allentown, Pa.-based Air Products announced plans for a $1.3-billion hydrogen facility in Edmonton. The federal and Alberta government said they would back the project, but have yet to reach funding agreements, Air Products spokesperson Katie McDonald told The Logic last month.
