Prime Minister Mark Carney emerged from his “long overdue” meeting with President Xi Jinping with an agreement that he would visit China—but with no word from either country about backing down on tariffs just yet. (The Logic)

Talking point: Canada slapped 100 per cent tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles and 25 per cent on Chinese steel and aluminum in October 2024, after the U.S. imposed similar tariffs on China. Beijing responded this year with steep duties on Canadian canola and other agricultural products. In a readout from the meeting Friday at the APEC summit in South Korea, the Prime Minister’s Office said Carney and Xi tapped officials to “move quickly to resolve outstanding trade issues and irritants.” It also said they talked about co-operating on energy, agriculture, manufacturing, climate change and international finance. “Distance is not the way to solve problems, not the way to serve our people,” Carney told Xi as the meeting began.
