Canada supports a statement by some European leaders reminding the U.S. that Denmark—and its semi-autonomous Arctic territory—is part of NATO, Prime Minister Mark Carney told Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Tuesday in Paris. (The Logic)
Talking point: After the U.S. military raid on Venezuela, President Donald Trump revived his calls for American annexation of Greenland, arguing the U.S. is better equipped to defend the former Danish colony from Chinese and Russian threats to Arctic security. Frederiksen said Monday a U.S. attack on NATO would end the Western military alliance. Carney told reporters Tuesday the future of the territory belongs “exclusively” to Greenland and Denmark. He stressed the need to boost investments in Arctic security, but said members of the alliance can do that together. “As NATO, we can provide security for all of NATO, Greenland included.”
