Talking point: The relationship between then-prime minister Justin Trudeau and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi was rarely warm, but things worsened when Trudeau accused India’s government of orchestrating the 2023 killing of a Sikh activist, who was a Canadian citizen, in B.C. India denied being involved. Both countries are now facing U.S. tariffs and seeking to diversify trade. Liberal Leader Mark Carney said this could be a chance to “rebuild the relationships with India.” Bloomberg cited unnamed sources saying there is openness to welcoming the envoys back. Meanwhile, China’s ambassador to Ottawa repeated his argument that Beijing is open to trade talks if Canada lifts restrictions on Chinese investment. “But China also opposes any country using China as a bargaining chip when it deals with other countries,” he said.
