The federal government is concerned that “China has an intentional, state-directed policy of over-capacity” that could threaten Canada’s efforts to be a world leader in manufacturing electric vehicles, a spokesperson for Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland told The Logic. “We are actively considering next steps to counter Chinese oversupply,” Katherine Cuplinskas wrote in an email. Talking point: Bloomberg first reported that the government may soon start consultations on raising tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles, citing unnamed sources. On Thursday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford called for tariffs of at least 100 per cent on Chinese-made EVs, saying they’re needed to protect Canada’s massive public investments in the battery and automotive supply chains. The EU hiked tariffs on Chinese-made EVs earlier this month after the United States did so in May.
