According to a survey of 400 hiring professionals with experience bringing in foreign employees from Chicago-based Envoy—which helps companies hire international talent—80 per cent of employers expect to hire more foreign workers or retain the same headcount. Because of stricter immigration policies, U.S. companies are hiring more outside of the country; 63 per cent of employers surveyed said they were either sending more workers to Canada or hiring foreign nationals from there. Talking point: In contrast to the U.S. government scaling back approval of H-1B visas—which help U.S. companies hire highly-skilled talent—Canada’s government has taken steps to attract high-skilled immigrants, enacting a two-week visa, dubbed the Global Skills Strategy program, to help tech companies hire senior talent from abroad, and making its Start-up Visa program permanent in 2018. Earlier this week, however, my colleague Murad reported that just 666 people had been approved through the latter program between 2014 and 2018. The Global Skills Strategy, meanwhile, is attracting a steady stream of U.S. residents. They made up 6,027 of 21,775 applications approved under the program between June 2017 and September 2018.
