Talking point: British Columbia and Quebec were among the first jurisdictions in North America to adopt some form of 100 per cent zero-emission vehicle mandate, and the federal government has said it will do the same. But the law on the books in California is likely to influence other U.S. jurisdictions and could lead to more concrete ZEV mandates across the world, experts told The New York Times. Given that about 40 per cent of Canadian light vehicle sales are from U.S. brands, any incentive causing American automakers to alter EV manufacturing plans could also impact Canadian car buyers. A report from Clean Energy Canada this month found the national policy should align with California, Quebec, B.C. and the U.K. in mandating a “ramp up” of sales targets ahead of the 2035 ban. If not, the group said, Canada could “end up lacking in ZEV supply as manufacturers will prioritize these states instead of our national market.”
