Talking point: Canadian political leaders have been urging people to buy domestically produced goods since U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war kicked off. The Buy Canadian movement has gained momentum, the report found, “and recent years have taught us that behavioural forces matter in the economy.” Shifting consumer spending comes at a cost, however. Only 40 per cent of goods have realistic Canadian-made substitutes, the report found, with clothing being the most expensive category to buy domestically. It will ultimately be difficult for consumers to shop their way out of a potential recession, however—the report found these actions would be “outweighed by the impact of the trade war itself.”
