The online meal-ordering platform for Asian food said Chowbus, a Chicago-based startup, will focus on developing its restaurant software and point-of-sales business after the deal closes. Financial terms were not disclosed. (The Logic)
Talking point: Fantuan, which was founded in 2014, serves more than 60 cities in Canada, Australia, the U.S. and U.K. with backing from Asian investors including prominent Chinese venture capitalist Eddie Wu, one of Alibaba’s co-founders. In December, it raised a US$40-million Series C, co-led by existing investor Celtic House Asia Partners and GrubMarket. Founded in 2016, Chowbus serves 21 U.S. cities and added the software and payments businesses to its repertoire in 2022. Celtic House is also among its investors. The acquisition will help strengthen Fantuan’s foothold in the U.S. Asian food delivery market, said CEO Randy Wu in a statement, and the two companies will also partner to improve each other’s delivery services and technology offerings.
