In a memo for the tech group, chair Daniel Debow said the federal government should raise the exemption for founders and early employees to $25 million per firm, and defer it if they put their profits into another private Canadian company. He also recommended Ottawa “avoid new regulations” on AI, not revive the former Liberal government’s proposed law, and introduce any rule changes it must make within six months. (The Logic)
Talking point: Debow was on the 28-person task force that AI Minister Evan Solomon appointed in September to advise on the overhaul of Canada’s national AI strategy; the memo reflects his submission. He claims the tax and regulatory proposals will keep more founders and startups in Canada and give businesses room to adopt AI. The memo also incorporates recommendations from other Build Canada members, like changes to Scientific Research and Experimental Development tax credits and industrial funding programs to more quickly commercialize AI ideas generated in the country. And it calls for Ottawa to hire “elite engineers and AI specialists” at private sector salaries to install the technology across departments.
