Talking point: It’s a long-awaited transition point for the Canadian tech brand, which exited the hardware business in 2016 but has been providing legacy support to die-hard fans. The company has been warning users of the Jan. 4 deadline to switch devices since Sept. 2020, as it moves to focus more on its cybersecurity and internet-of-things businesses. Meanwhile, BlackBerry has yet to shake one other holdover from its phonemaker days. In a Monday decision, a New York judge did not accept the company’s arguments to dismiss shareholder allegations that in public statements in 2013 it gave inflated accounts of the profitability of its BlackBerry 10 smartphones.
