Talking point: Once the project is complete, the government said, BioVectra will be able to produce up to 160 million doses of mRNA-based vaccines a year. The limited global capacity to make cutting-edge mRNA vaccines (Canada had none) was the key factor in stalled early shipments of COVID-19 vaccines last winter. Like some other recipients of federal Strategic Innovation Fund money, BioVectra’s growth has been helped by regular infusions of government aid, including $37.5 million in 2019 and $5 million in 2018.
