Talking point: The Crown corporation has been wading deeper into the defence-tech sector, as the federal government prepares to increase military spending sharply over the next decade under its NATO commitments. The government has tasked BDC with deploying $6 billion in public funding to the sector. Most of that money will come through loans and new programs to support small and medium enterprises. The bank has also launched a $300-million venture capital vehicle, the StrongNorth Fund. Joining the NATO investment network gives BDC an earlier look at NATO’s technology priorities and investment opportunities across the alliance. It will also help connect Canadian companies with international capital, markets and partners.
