Talking point: The initiative offers companies in the province grants worth up to $10,000 for every worker hired for tech and tech-enabled jobs. The province revamped the program to prioritize placing people disproportionately affected by COVID-19 and those underrepresented in the tech sector, including Indigenous people and women. Some in the province’s gaming and animation industry have been working to make workplaces more inclusive of Indigenous people, who make up less than one per cent of B.C.’s tech workforce. Meanwhile, a program to train Indigenous software testers with a job guarantee upon graduation will soon hold a course in Victoria for the first time.
