David Eby told reporters that $60 billion of proposed capital investment in mines and other projects could be at risk if Ottawa reverses its oil tanker moratorium. The law was enacted in 2019 under then-prime minister Justin Trudeau, and restricts vessels carrying crude oil from mooring on the province’s northern coastline. (The Canadian Press)
Talking point: Eby said the tanker ban “is the social licence with First Nations along the coast to be able to do significant economic development in the region.” Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, along with Alberta’s energy sector, has long called on Ottawa to scrap the moratorium, arguing that it restricts the industry’s ability to expand capacity and reach new markets. Eby on Wednesday also called for greater attention to the province’s softwood lumber industry, which he said was on the “razor’s edge of survival” amid the Trump administration’s tariffs.
