Talking point: The finance minister revealed in a Monday news conference some details of what to expect, building on Friday’s release of the province’s economic recovery plan. In November 2021, the government’s second quarterly report projected a budget deficit of $1.7 billion—down from an estimated $9.7 billion in last year’s budget and $4.8-billion deficit in its first quarterly report. The update, however, did not factor in the costs of B.C.’s recent floods “that will no doubt have economic and fiscal consequences,” Scotiabank senior economist Marc Desormeaux wrote at the time. Robinson said Monday that financial estimates related to the flooding will be in the budget.
