A Brampton, Ont. fulfillment centre must stop operating and its thousands of employees must self-isolate for two weeks starting tomorrow until March 27, said Peel Public Health. The company disagrees with the decision. “We do not believe the data supports this closure and we will appeal this decision,” spokesperson Dave Bauer said via email. (The Logic)
Talking point:Peel Public Health said it has been working closely with Amazon Canada to control the outbreak, and the order will give the company more time to consider the agency’s recommended operational changes. According to Bauer, the company regularly tests its roughly 4,700 employees at the warehouse, which opened in 2016 and spans 850,000 square feet, and its most recent round showed a less than one per cent positivity rate. “There appears to be little risk of spread within our facility,” he said. The warehouse closure follows a City of Brampton decision Tuesday to temporarily suspend a bus route after a major outbreak at a “large logistics business,” with nine bus drivers testing positive in the last month. Amazon said it has provided private busing in recent weeks to support Brampton transit, among other measures. Some Amazon workers in Canada have said the pandemic has exacerbated their workplace health and safety concerns (Amazon said employee health, safety and well-being is a top priority). Bauer said the facility’s hiatus could impact Canadian customers in the short term. – Aleksandra
