Talking point: Google has been playing catch-up to OpenAI’s wildly popular ChatGPT by releasing rival product Bard and reportedly calling in co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin for help in January. The reorganization will “significantly accelerate” the company’s AI progress, Pichai said in the blog post, and help Google develop AI “more safely and responsibly”—an area where some employees have accused it of falling short. DeepMind set up its first office outside the U.K. in Edmonton in 2017 followed by locations in Toronto and Montreal. However, the company shut its Alberta office earlier this year and offered its engineers and researchers there the option to relocate.
