Talking point: Pembina’s calculations come after Alberta Premier Danielle Smith put a seven-month hold on all wind, solar and other renewable energy projects earlier this month, citing concerns over grid stability and local opposition to development. Alberta has been a hot spot for renewable power generation in recent years, accounting for three-quarters of Canada’s clean energy developments in 2022. Pembina analysts Jason Wang and Will Noel said the moratorium has created “uncertainty for investors in a growing economic sector” and hinders what is a “no-regrets economy-building decision.” Their analysis comes days after the province’s grid regulator said it would continue processing applications during the moratorium, but will now require developers to provide information around issues like reclamation plans and viewscapes.
