Amazon’s shipping costs, expected to rise to US$90 billion in the coming years, have been one of CEO Jeff Bezos’s abiding obsessions, with the company’s much-ballyhooed drone delivery failed to fully launch. Should it acquire Zoox, which specializes in driverless taxis, it would not only breathe life into the flagging startup; it would rival the autonomous efforts of the likes of Tesla, GM and Uber, among others.
