Talking point: Only three per cent of Fortune 500 companies make their diversity data publicly available, pushing Kauffman to use software to examine two decades of profile images of over 260,000 startup founders and executives in the U.S. It puts to bed the idea that the paucity of non-white founders is due to a lack of education: Black and Latinx founders made up just five per cent of startup executives, despite there being an increase in those groups obtaining graduate degrees. The issue of diversity in industry was put under the spotlight last month, when Goldman Sachs said it wouldn’t take companies public that don’t have at least one woman board member.
