Data4, a Paris-based subsidiary, will spend up to €15 billion ($22 billion) on data centres by 2030. Toronto-headquartered Brookfield Asset Management itself will invest another €5 billion on related assets in France like energy generation. (The Logic)
Talking point: French President Emmanuel Macron’s government has secured €109 billion in AI funding commitments from companies and funds ahead of the AI Action Summit in Paris this week. Beyond Brookfield, the United Arab Emirates government, French public agency Bpifrance and telecom firm Iliad have all promised to invest billions. Countries are competing for the huge sums required to build AI infrastructure. On Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a case for Canada from the stage in Paris. “Sure, it gets cold,” he said, but a freezing climate “means half price on cooling for your data centres.” He also touted the country’s AI research strength, semiconductor expertise and clean energy grid, including its nuclear capabilities.
