The websites for the Indigenous-focused initiative and the Empowered by Shopify directory of Black- and Indigenous-owned businesses are now unavailable, although both were live last week. Shopify did not respond to The Logic’s questions about whether it had ended Build Native and other equity-focused initiatives. BetaKit first reported the closure. (BetaKit, The Logic)
Talking point: Shopify launched programming to support Black and Indigenous entrepreneurs in mid-2020, at a time when many technology companies were making similar moves. But the sector’s biggest firms have been ending both internal and external diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, in step with the new Trump administration’s push against them. On Monday, Shopify Build Native founder Kyle Brennan Shàwinipinesì posted on LinkedIn that he had left the Ottawa-headquartered commerce company, noting that he had built “a mission rooted in creating opportunities for my community.” Brandon Davenport, the firm’s head of equitable commerce, has also left, BetaKit reported.
