I am writing today with some exciting news about The Logic’s growth.

It’s hard to believe that less than one year ago, I was sitting in a borrowed office in downtown Toronto reviewing the final checklist for The Logic’s soft launch. Functioning website: check. Handful of stories ready to publish: check. Dedicated staff: double check.

Much has changed since then. Our staff has doubled. We’ve published scores of exclusive stories, won major journalism awards, launched a bureau in Ottawa and shown that in-depth journalism is worth paying for (well, you—our subscribers—are the ones who proved that, for which we are forever grateful!).

Today, I’m proud to share the next chapter in our evolution. Early this morning, we signed a letter of intent with Postmedia, the Canadian news media company with over 140 outlets nationwide, that includes a minority investment in and a distribution relationship with The Logic. We announced the news during the Collision Conference in Toronto.

We are excited about what this will allow us to bring to you, our subscribers. Already, we have more journalists covering Canada’s innovation economy than any other newsroom in the country. This partnership will allow us to hire more reporters and further expand the commitment we made to you to focus the vast majority of our dollars on journalism, not overhead.

It also means you’ll get even more value from your subscription. In addition to increasing The Logic’s exclusive investigations, in-depth features and unparalleled analysis, Postmedia’s investment enables us to further build out our community, bringing you more events and opportunities to connect with each other and with other leaders shaping Canada’s future.

Furthermore, this partnership will allow us to extend our reach and widen our impact. As I wrote when we launched, I founded The Logic because of journalism’s critical role in sparking conversations about how Canada can succeed in the innovation economy. As a result of the Postmedia partnership, a selection of The Logic’s journalism will appear in newspapers and on local news sites in cities and towns across Canada. We hope this will expand the debate on how Canada can continue to be a better place to live and work, and that we can develop our subscriber community as a result.

The Logic will continue to operate independently and pursue its unique editorial vision. While we’re excited that some of our content will be available more widely—including to the majority of Canadians who rely on local papers for their news—as a subscriber you will continue to have exclusive access to our events, conference calls and our other features, all of which will continually improve as we grow. Our subscribers are at the core of what we do, and building the subscriber community remains our number-one focus.

If you have any questions or comments, don’t hesitate to reach out by emailing me at [email protected], or by directly replying to this email.

Thank you for coming along with us on this crazy adventure. We can’t wait to have you along for the next chapter!
