Mike Cessario announced Tuesday he has raised an additional US$1.6 million for the startup that sells water in tall cans focused on “straight-edge punks” (or anyone else who doesn’t drink alcohol or soda, but still wants to look cool while quenching their thirst). The funding round was led by Los Angeles-based startup investor Science Inc. and attracted some big names in tech, like Twitter co-founder Biz Stone and Away co-founder Jen Rubio. Tuesday’s round brings the total raised to US$2.25 million. (Business Insider)
Talking point: Putting aside that it’s not punk to say you’re punk, there are success stories in the unconventional water-packaging business. Toronto-based Flow Alkaline Spring Water has done well with its non-plastic and 100 per cent recyclable packaging. It even jumped into the cannabis game through Flow Glow, a CBD-infused vitamin water, in late 2018. Cessario certainly has the marketing chops for this unique approach to water, having been responsible for some of Netflix’s viral campaigns for “House of Cards,” “Stranger Things” and “Narcos.” I’ll let you judge the venture for yourself by leaving you with its tagline: “Murder Your Thirst.”
