Talking point: In November 2013, Rogers committed $5.2 billion for the rights to run NHL games in Canada across all platforms—including streaming—for the following 12 years. As that deal draws down, it’s carving out a package for Prime, which already hosts a digital version of Rogers’s Sportsnet channel. Amazon has tried this before, with mixed results. In June 2018, it scored 20 of 200 English Premier League (EPL) fixtures for each of the following three seasons; terrestrial British broadcasters split the rest. The deal was seen as a test case for streamers’ sporting ambitions, and an opportunity for leagues to boost rights bidding. But Amazon and other digital platforms didn’t even bid on the latest EPL package. (It is now vying to air the NBA, as is YouTube.) Rogers has said it will look to renew its rights to broadcast the NHL when its current deal expires.
