Talking point: Lawyers use Bench IQ’s tools to study judges and attorneys they anticipate facing in courtrooms. Founded last April, the firm is applying large language models to rulings. Bench IQ CEO Jimoh Ovbiagele has precedent with legal AI startups. He was previously a co-founder and CTO of Ross Intelligence, which developed machine-learning tools for research, case review and document analysis. The Toronto-founded firm closed in December 2020, amid a copyright infringement lawsuit from Thomson Reuters. Startups applying generative AI to law promise to make busywork more efficient or attorneys better prepared, and venture capital is flowing in—last month, Inovia led a US$20-million Series A for St. John’s-based Spellbook, for example.
