Talking point: The new facility is another sign that Waymo is finally starting to scale up. In December 2018, it launched its long-anticipated self-driving taxi service in a 160-kilometre zone throughout four Phoenix suburbs, including Chandler, after a decade of testing. However, later that month, there were reports of violent backlash to the testing from some citizens. For its part, Magna has long been interested in autonomous cars. In 2017, it joined an alliance with BMW and Intel to develop a self-driving vehicle platform for drivers by 2020.
