Canada and India’s leaders discussed economic issues including concessional-development financing, according to Ottawa’s readout of the conversation. Modi “conveyed our strong concerns about continuing anti-India activities” in Canada, per New Delhi’s version of the talks. (The Logic)
Talking point: In June, Trudeau’s national security advisor Jody Thomas cited India as one of the sources of foreign interference in Canadian affairs. The following day, New Delhi reiterated its criticism that Ottawa is not curtailing advocacy by Sikh groups for a separate Khalistan state. The two countries have also been working on a long-promised trade deal. Deal talks were paused this month at Canada’s request, with Trudeau saying only that “the negotiations around free trade are long and complex.” Meanwhile, Trudeau and those travelling with him remain in New Delhi after the prime minister’s plane couldn’t take off for technical reasons. A replacement jet has been dispatched.
