The federal ElevateIP scheme will fund the Kitchener-based accelerator as well as Springboard Atlantic; Mouvement des accélérateurs d’innovation du Québec; a consortium of the University of Calgary, Innovate Calgary and Economic Development Lethbridge; and New Ventures BC. The five groups will provide run workshops and programming for startups, and help them develop their own IP strategies. (The Logic)
Talking point: The federal government pledged the funding for ElevateIP in the April 2021 federal budget. Monday’s announcement is a step in delivering it. The five organizations will be judged in part on how many enrolled startups come up with intellectual property strategies and get patents and other protections. The Liberals have insisted they want IP developed in Canada to stay in Canada, especially if it was developed with public money. Tech executives with long-standing concerns about the loss of Canadian-made and -paid ideas have criticized ElevateIP as a means of propping up accelerators; however, the accelerators say they’re best placed to support startups.
