The second consecutive month of shrunken employment—after a net loss of 41,700 positions in August—means Canada has lost 41,200 jobs so far this year, wiping out earlier gains. (The Logic)
Talking point: This report marks the first full month since U.S. President Donald Trump slapped additional 50 per cent tariffs on a range of Canadian goods on Aug. 22, yet Statistics Canada said Friday the decline was driven by a loss of 70,000 public sector employees. There were also 12,700 jobs lost in the manufacturing sector, which has been hit hard by U.S. tariffs. Overall, the public sector saw a year-over-year job loss of 2.6 per cent, which the agency said was mostly linked to a decline in the educational services, while the private sector grew by 1.2 per cent in that period. In September, the loss was split almost evenly between full-time and part-time positions.
