The Melbourne-headquartered firm currently has 17 employees in Toronto, and plans to hire up to 30 more. It will spend $25.4 million through 2029 on the expansion, covering salaries, an R&D program to adapt its technology for Canadian and U.S. markets, sales expenses and office space, said Mark Leno, Heidi’s general manager for Canada. Talking point: The firm sells an AI scribe that doctors and nurses can use to transcribe patient appointments, and draft clinical notes for their files. Heidi also makes medical information lookup tools. The firm says Canada is its second-largest market, after home country Australia. Users include health-care systems from Ontario to Yukon, where proponents say it frees health-care workers to focus on patients. But the spread of AI scribes has also sparked privacy concerns, particularly since they tend to use AI models developed and hosted outside Canada. Leno said the Toronto office will help make Heidi better at French, and help it work within the Ontario health-care insurance system and integrate with local health record platforms. On Tuesday, the firm also announced it had raised a US$100-million Series C round at a US$900-million valuation, plus another US$240 million from General Catalyst for sales and marketing.
