Talking point: If the news feels familiar, it’s because Canada’s negotiators were in a similar position a few days ago, before the initial deadline. U.S. President Donald Trump offered a three-day reprieve while both sides continued talking. If they can’t strike a deal by 12:01 a.m. EDT on Saturday, the tariffs are expected to come into effect. Prime Minister Mark Carney has reportedly asked provincial premiers to put American liquor back on Canadian shelves and halt procurement rules that bar American suppliers from government contracts as part of the potential deal, in exchange for lower sectoral tariffs.
