The Vancouver biotech firm is working on a new kind of regenerative medicine by bioprinting living human tissue. The federal money will go toward Aspect’s $280-million project to advance the company’s biomanufacturing capabilities, improve its AI-powered platform and help it commercialize its work. (The Logic)
Talking point: Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said the contribution will help establish Canada’s first bioprinting facility for tissue therapeutics. The department didn’t immediately say whether the contribution is a loan or a grant. The government’s goal is to help make Vancouver a global life-science hub, she said. Ottawa’s contribution comes from the recently rebranded Strategic Response Fund (formerly the Strategic Innovation Fund), and the B.C. government has agreed to contribute an additional $23.8 million. Both governments also contributed a combined $72.75 million to the company in 2024. CEO Tamer Mohamed said the company has raised more than half a billion dollars and he hopes to turn it into a $100-billion company anchored in Canada.
